Light Garden was designed by international renowned artist Dale Eldred in 1988. It was originally located in the courtyard of the former Pavilion Convention Center, but needed to be relocated when the Pavilion was demolished in 2003. In 2012, landscape architect, Keith Oliver with the firm, InSites led the project to give the sculpture a new configuration for a new location at Princess Anne Park. The 32 glass sun-refraction panels are now arranged at Princess Anne Commons Gateway Park to resemble a grove of trees and to illustrate the role of light throughout the day. The lighting update from neon to LED was by Gary Granger of Pace Collabroative. Barbara Duke and Greg Newman with the Parks and Recreation department championed the project through the design and construction processes.
About the Artist
Dale Eldred was an internationally acclaimed sculptor renowned for large-scale sculptures that emphasized both natural and generated light.
Eldred chaired the sculpture department at Kansas City Art Institute for 33 years, exerting a powerful influence on thousands of students. Eldred was also the artistic director of Biosphere II, and a fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Center for Advanced Visual Studies.
Eldred received numerous awards and honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and grants from the Ford Foundation, the American Institute of Architects and the National Endowment of the Arts. Dale Eldred died in 1993 during the "500-year" flood.
