Joseph "Sonny" Walton attended Booker T. Washington High School in 1959 and graduated from The McAllister School of Embalming in New York. Known as a business man, Walton and his wife established the Walton Funeral home in Virginia Beach in 1967. Walton has the oldest minority business in the city of Virginia Beach. He earned the title of the Living Legends of Funeral Service awarded by the 100 Black Women of Funeral Service. In 1979, Walton began working with the Sheriff’s Department, retiring in 1992. Joseph "Sonny" Walton is described as a gentle spirit and mentor.
